Our Traditions

As a Laker, you have opportunities to participate in a variety of beloved events that have been passed on year after year.

Fall Fest and Involvement Fair

These two events are hosted by Student Corporation and held during the first couple weeks of the new academic year. Both of these events are a great way for students to learn about the different ways to get involved, connect with others and make new friends, and get excited about the new semester! The Involvement Fair is held again during the second week of the spring semester, too.

Laker Day

Laker Day takes place each fall and spring semester and is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to interact outside the classroom through experiential learning opportunities.

Students test their skills, gain new experiences, and expand their horizons. They also have a chance to meet people in their field of study, including potential employers.

Activities change from year to year and have included ropes courses, workshops, visits to area parks and points of historical significance, and working with area grade school children in different activities.

Laker Day Activities

Veterans Day Ceremony

Our Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11 each year (or the nearest school day, if it falls on a weekend) is sponsored by the FLCC Student Corporation and the Office of Student Life. Traditionally, this event showcases the Canandaigua American Legion Honor Guard, our own student singers, remarks from our College President, and a keynote address by an area veteran. A dessert reception is followed afterwards.

This special event recognizes student and local veterans and their families. It is a wonderful tradition that the College holds for our students and the community.

Multicultural Week

Held each spring, Multicultural Week is a week-long celebration of diversity. Each year brings new events and highlights different cultures. The signature event of the week is the Explore the Globe tasting event, which provides tasting stations of food from a variety of countries or continents.

Other events held over the years include: presentation of artifacts from local Native American tribes, Henna artists, Japanese calligraphy demonstration, spoken word artists, music and dance performances, film screening and discussion, and more. This is sponsored by Student Corporation.

May Day

Hosted by the Student Corp Activities Committee (with help from countless student and employee volunteers), this is the largest and oldest event held annually. May Day takes place on the first Friday in May each year, and turns our campus into a carnival! This event features free food, giveaways, entertainment, and inflatables. It provides an unforgettable way for students to celebrate the end of the academic year.

Love Being a Laker

Student Corporation hosts an ongoing series of events to celebrate our College community's FLCC spirit. These include: Love Being a Laker events, giveaways at athletic events, prizes for wearing FLCC gear or colors, and more. You're even likely to see an appearance by our lake monster mascot, Flick.

Club and Organization Events

Many of the clubs and organizations under Student Corporation host their own traditions. Our Student Corp Activities Committee, the programming arm of Student Corporation, is known for monthly movie nights and SCAC Creations. Themed months are celebrated including Hispanic Heritage Month in September/October, and Black History Month in February. Horticulture Club celebrates Earth Day in April each year.
