Accommodations
Requesting Reasonable Accommodations
- Fill out and submit the Student Disclosure Form.
- Submit documentation of a diagnosis/disability, or schedule a consultation meeting with the Coordinator of Disability Services.
- The Coordinator of Disability Services will review the paperwork and consultation notes to determine the appropriate accommodations and adjustments. The approved accommodations will be listed on an Accommodation Notification form, which will be sent to students the week before the start of the upcoming semester. Note: if you register with our office after a semester has already begun, you will receive the Accommodation Notification within a few days of submitting your paperwork.
- It is the student's responsibility to share the Accommodation Notification with instructors to begin utilizing the approved accommodations and adjustments.
- Students will receive an updated version of their Accommodation Notification at the start of each semester (via email). There is no need to resubmit paperwork after this point, unless additional accommodations or adjustments are being requested.
Testing Accommodations
Online exams
For students enrolled in online courses or remote/Hyflex courses that have their exams online, the instructors will automatically adjust your extra time on timed exams within the exam platform (most will use the student learning platform Brightspace). If you live close to campus and would like to utilize our testing rooms to take your online exams, you are welcome to. Please fill out the test sign-up form to reserve a space.
In-person exams
Students approved for testing accommodations must schedule a testing appointment with Disability Services. We ask students to notify us at least three business days before an upcoming exam or quiz, so we have time to contact the instructor and retrieve the exam.
Note: The Academic Support Centers at each campus center will provide testing accommodations for exams and quizzes at that location.
Assistive Technology
- Glean — Glean is a notetaking assistance software that allows students to upload slides (if applicable), record lectures and take notes simultaneously. The audio can then be converted to transcription at a later time. All recordings/notes are kept in a cloud-based system within Glean to avoid taking up storage space on a student's device.
- Kurzweil 3000 — Kurzweil is our preferred text-to-speech software. Students who qualify for a reader accommodation will have access to the web-based Kurzweil application. This is also the tool we use to convert textbooks to an audio format.
- Voice typing in Google Docs — This is the most accurate, user-friendly, speech-to-text program around. (You need a Gmail account to utilize Google Docs but it is free to create an account.) FLCC predominantly uses Microsoft Office but you can easily save a Google Doc as a word document.
- Transcription services — Students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing can request live transcriptions as an accommodation. The transcriptions are provided by a professional agency outside of FLCC. The transcriptionist will type to you live (from a remote location) so that you are not missing out on information being presented in class.
- CCTV/magnifier — uses a stand-mounted or handheld video camera to project a magnified image onto a video monitor/tablet. All video magnifiers offer the option of viewing black letters on a white background or white letters on a black background. Many video magnifiers also offer a screen reader function.
- FM Systems — wireless transmission method used to transmit sound to hearing aids. Students who utilize hearing aids can request to loan out an FM system. Typically hearing aids require an attachment, depending on the make/model, in order for the FM system to pair correctly. Please reach out to Disability Services and your audiologist as soon as possible so that we can work on ordering the correct attachment prior to the start of the semester.
