Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are considered "gift aid" because they are free money: financial aid that doesn't have to be repaid. Students can receive scholarships from a variety of sources and for a variety of reasons. Eligibility is determined each year after you complete the FAFSA, TAP, and any other applications.

Federal Grants

The federal government provides grant funds for students attending FLCC. The major federal grant programs at FLCC are the Pell and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG).

Pell

  • Awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need
  • Lifetime eligibility is limited to 12 semesters or the equivalent
  • Must file the FAFSA to determine eligibility

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants

  • Must be eligible for a Pell Grant to be considered
  • Students taking 3 credits or more in their degree program and completing the FAFSA by March 15 are given first consideration
  • Funds are limited

New York State Aid

New York State offers many financial aid programs to assist students with meeting their educational expenses, including aid to full-time and part-time students attending a NYS college.

  • Excelsior Scholarship

The Excelsior Scholarship provides tuition-free college at New York State's public colleges and universities to eligible New Yorkers making up to $125,000.

Determining eligibility for the Excelsior Scholarship is a two-part process:

    1. After applying for the scholarship through HESC, you'll receive a notification regarding your status. If you have met HESC's requirements, your information will be sent to FLCC for further review.
    2. FLCC will then review transcripts and other documentation and your current financial aid awards, and if you meet the scholarship requirements, you will receive notification from FLCC confirming your eligibility and the amount of your Excelsior scholarship.

Recipients of the Excelsior Scholarship may receive an award up to the full cost of tuition. The maximum award provided by the Excelsior Scholarship is reduced by the amount of other grants and scholarships a student receives for the academic year.

  • The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

New York State residents planning to attend a SUNY college — including FLCC — should apply for the New York Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). TAP is available for eligible students taking 6 or more credit hours per semester in their program of study.

The easiest way to apply for TAP is through the FAFSA. The FAFSA application process will automatically link you to the TAP application if:

    • You are a New York State resident, and
    • You included at least one approved SUNY college on your FAFSA.

Depending on the academic year in which you begin study, an annual TAP award can be up to $5,665. Because TAP is a grant, you do not have to pay it back. TAP awards are based on NYS net taxable income and other factors.

At FLCC, these eligible programs include:

    • Business Entrepreneurial Studies
